Its been awhile i havnt posted in my blog. Well, was busy on semester exams and internships and other works. However, my exams arent still over yet, although, i would still want to kep my blog updated. So here’s my latest post.

KCM Prospectus 2008

I had recently designed a prospectus for Kathmandu College of Management for the new session that will commence on this August. The tools used were Adobe Indesign 2.0 and Adobe Photoshop CS3. It was really a nice experience to work with new people (although they are my old friends, i hadn’t yet worked with them proffessionally), namely, Prashant Pokharel (Content, Concept), Rabi Rayamajhi (Cpncept, Design and content), Aditya Piya (Concept and Content) and Prabesh Manandhar (Photography). I was involved as the main designer and of course for the concept too.

My friends have been telling me to post some tutorials too. So here it is. My first online tutorial. Since this is the first, i would like to start with a very simple one: The Reflection Effect.

There’s no trick here. Its a very very simple effect. We’ll take a sample object and render it to bring out its reflection. So lets start it off already.

Step 1. Open up a new Photoshop document. Use any background. I used plain white (#ffffff).

Step 2. Write a text. You can use any picture too. For instance, I have written my own name: Anjan. Now make sure that the lower part of all the characters in the text are in the same level. That is why I have written “ANJAN” in all caps. Had i written “Anjan”, the bottom part of “j” character will be in much lower level than that of other characters. This is just a tip to obtain a very good reflection effect. Name this layer “Main”.

Step 3. Now duplicate the “Main” layer. For duplication, you can do either of the following:

  • Right click on the layer of your layer pallette. The click on ‘duplicate layer’.
  • Click on the layer of your layer pallette. The press “Ctrl+j” on your keboard.
  • Step 4. Now, name this new duplicated layer “Reflection”. Now, being still on the same Reflection layer, press “Ctrl+t”. Now right click and click on ‘Flip vertical’. Press enter after it is vertically filpped.

Step 5. We’re almost halfway through now. Set the opacity of Reflection layer to 25%. Bring the reflection layer below the Main layer so that it looks like this:

Step 6. Bring out the Rectangular Marquee Tool from your tool box. Set the feather to 10px. Select in a rectangle shape over the layer like this:

Step 7. Now, invert the selection by pressing ‘Ctrl+Shift+I’. Right click on the Reflection layer in your layer palette and click on ‘Rasterize type’. Press Delete. You should get an effect like this:

And so here you are!! You can use the same technique to create reflections of any objects.

That’s all folks for now!! Hope you enjoyed going through the tutorial. Keep logging in for some more in the future.
